Who Should Consider IVF?

IVF may be recommended for individuals or couples who face challenges that make natural conception difficult such as:

Blocked Or Damaged Fallopian Tubes

When one or both fallopian tubes are damaged, the egg and sperm cannot meet naturally. IVF provides an alternative for fertilisation in a controlled laboratory environment.

Low Sperm Quality

Low sperm count, poor motility, and abnormal sperm shape can make conception difficult. IVF can assist by directly introducing the sperm to the egg.

Unsuccessful IUI Attempts

For those who tried intrauterine insemination (IUI) without success, IVF is often recommended as the next option.

Endometriosis

This condition, where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, can disrupt egg quality and implantation. IVF offers a controlled environment to support fertilisation and improve the chances of pregnancy.

Why Acting Now Can Make All the Difference

Your Step-by-Step Guide to the IVF Process

Step 1: Egg Simulation

  • Begin daily hormone injections on Day 2 of the menstrual cycle to stimulate multiple eggs.
  • Injections continue for 10–12 days and are self-administered at home.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

  • Undergo an ultrasound on Day 8 or 9 to evaluate egg maturity.
  • Mature eggs are retrieved under anaesthesia in a 20–30 minute day surgery procedure.

Step 3: Fertilisation & Embryo Culture

  • Eggs are fertilised with sperm in the IVF lab.
  • Embryos are observed for 3–5 days, with abnormal ones discarded.
  • Healthy embryos are frozen for future transfer.

Step 4: Embryo Transfer

Healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus in a straightforward procedure, similar to an IUI or Pap smear.

Step 5: Pregnancy Confirmation

Two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is performed to confirm pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Chances of Pregnancy with IVF?

The success rates of IVF typically range between 50-60%, with higher rates for women under 35.

Recent advancements suggest that freezing embryos before transferring them back into the uterus may further improve success rates. This approach allows for better control of the woman’s hormonal balance in a controlled frozen transfer cycle.

Additionally, embryos that survive the freezing process are thought to be more robust. Frozen embryo transfers are now a common practice at most reputable fertility centres worldwide.

Most couples achieve pregnancy within three IVF cycles, and it’s common for success to occur in fewer than three cycles. Rarely are more than three to four cycles needed.

Improving IVF success rates begins with a consultation with your fertility specialist. Both partners’ medical conditions are reviewed, and specific tests may be conducted to assess:

  • Uterine health
  • Ovarian and egg quality
  • Sperm count and quality

It’s important to note that each person’s treatment plan is unique and may involve tailored tests or programs to optimise the chances of conception.

Genetic testing of embryos can be helpful in identifying chromosomal abnormalities, but in Singapore, it is currently restricted to couples with certain proven medical conditions. Discuss with your fertility specialist to determine if this option is applicable to your situation.
